Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were competent to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took some more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed basically of the ‘white’ that is sensed by the humane eye. It took the exploration done by famous physicist Isaac Newton to discover that light is in truth composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a huge contribution to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not actually have anything to do with camera development per se.

The early camera that primary became a phenomenon was a little more than a pinhole camera and may be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was seen as a drawing tool for a clearer and realistic portrayal of objects. It was in the early 19th century that an invention named the Camera Lucida was introduced by Cambridge scientist William Hyde Wollaston that consisted of an optical device that could support an artisan view a distant scene or person or object on a paper surface that he or she was using to draw. In other words the artisan gets to view a superimposed effigy of a subject on paper and this effigy could be efficaciously applied to undertake to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an effigy that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Studies nonetheless continued well into the 1800′s on how to in truth capture the effigy onto material. It was for the duration of this time, around 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, developed the introductory photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The effigy would not stay permanently on the paper and would vanish after a short while. Even so, in spite of the short-lived nature of the image, the conception of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for further study and development in this field.

Capturing images to retain them longer and permanently became the next huge quest for researchers. Another Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to formulate the procedure of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce passed from physical life in 1833 but Daguerre continued with the work and succeeded in 1837 after a good deal of long years of experimentation. The procedure of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the ‘daguerreotype’.

The word ‘photography’ was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is actually is derived from two Greek words ‘photos’ meaning light and ‘graphein’ meaning draw.

A somewhat more modern version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype routine that makes multiple copies possible using the negative and positive method became available very soon after. In fact, it was for the duration of the 1840′s that the use of photographic images in advertisements initial started and cameras made their mark on the power of visual communication. It was not much later, in the 1850′s that photographers firstborn started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the routine of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The invention made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a benediction since the new method termed the Collodion routine called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a development routine where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and each time and routine the effigy immediately. With the invention the gelatin arid plate silver bromide procedure by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be invented immediately. This was an indispensable invention since up until then the captured effigy had to be processed instantly.

Kodak invented in 1888 by George Eastman has been a innovative day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak produced the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An crucial milestone in our amusement and communication history was the development of transparent roll film by Eastman. This development led to another key invention – the motion picture camera by Thomas Edison’s in 1891.

–>Modern Times

During the 20th century the pace of technology development in cameras and photography continued at an sped pace much like a good deal of other key engineering developments. While various key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in numerous areas of communications technology and as well as in other fields – TV, aircrafts, PCs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole routine of photography, making it accessible to one and all at lowpriced prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The introductory mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and may be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the novice as well as the professional and the camera is an essential portion of any family’s repertoire of will have to have gadgets.

–>20th century chronology in the history of the camera:

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by General Electric Co. (The conception of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was devised by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts merchandising Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon freed the Hansa Canon in 1936, the introductory 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The conception of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land produced the procedure for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation formulated the ‘instant color’ film around 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau invented the firstborn waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was devised by the Belgian airplane technical architect Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was devised and patented by Texas Instruments. This is notwithstanding not the same as a digital camera even though you don’t require film in digital cameras as well. The launch of the digital camera is still some years away.

1975: Kodak’s experiments with digital imaging kicked off around the mid seventies but it will take another 20 years before a digital camera for the home buyer market is launched.

1978 – 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony commence to make their mark. The ‘point and shoot’ automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking when it comes to the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially available electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1985: Digital processing technology makes it is entry. Digital imaging and processing is introduced by Pixar.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more buyer concentered and taps the fun and travel connotations behind camera usage, with the launch of the conception of the disposable single use cameras. Fuji is credited with the development of this concept.

Also in 1986 – 1987, Kodak started taking giant strides in digital development. Digital means, the photographic effigy is divided into tiny units of dots or squares known as pixels. Pixels are the programmable units of an effigy that may be processed by computers. Each effigy could be made up of millions of pixels. The use of pixels in digital engineering allows storing huge volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo CD’s. It is a system of storing photographic images on CD and then looking at them on a computer. With this development the user-friendly approach of the camera industry begun to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera purposed at pros and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don’t use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage method is exclusively dissimilar and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital selective information may be transposed to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera manufacturers and there are likewise various other key brands as well.

1994: The Apple QuickTake camera, a home use digital camera is launched. This is followed by the launch of a clutch of home use digital cameras by Casio, Kodak and others in quick succession for the duration of 1995 -’96.

–>The digital era:

The development of digital camera engineering science is considered to be linked to the development of TV and Video technology. The principles of transmission and recording of audio-visual images using digital electrical impulses finds use in camera imaging as well.

Through the 1990′s the developments continued in camera technology, the focus now shifting to the field of digital imaging which is where the future lies. Use-friendly features like software that may download digital images directly from camera onto home computers for storing and sharing on the internet is the new norm in the market place.

The camera, the computer, the software industry and the international web are today irrevocably interlinked to empower the user in experiencing the gains of camera usage to full potential. The innovation that sparked a great deal of an invention in the camera industry found it is way into the digital world as well and continued among digital camera manufacturers. During 2001, the Kodak and Microsoft cooperative relationship ensured that digital camera makers could use the power of Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) ordinary through Windows. The digital photo experience is a key visual driver in the Internet era. Many of Kodak digital camera models with EasyShare capablenesses are compatible with Windows XP. The Kodak EasyShare software enables users to transfer digital camera pictures directly from camera to their computers and then print the pictures or even email them.

Manufacturers in a affiliated industry like the printing industry have adapted their productions to be in sync with the images produced by digital cameras. Cell phone manufacturers have tied up with digital camera makers to invent new age camera phones in recent years. These camera phones may capture images and portion the images through the cell phone.

Among the 21st century digital developments are the modern product offerings from digital cameras makers and these are sure to occupy an crucial place in the ensuing history of camera development. For instance, the Kodak Professional DCS Pro SLR/c is a high-end digital camera and the Kodak internetsite calls the DCS Pro SLR models the most feature-rich digital cameras on the market. It has an effigy sensor that may handle 13.89 million pixels and this makes it the most eminent solution digital camera available. High solution determines the sharpness or level of detail in photographic images. This is just a glimpse of the capablenesses that digital engineering science places in a user’s hands. Digital camera sales figures for 2003 show that the two key players Kodak and Canon have recorded impressive growth.

–>What does the future holds for camera users?

The features offered by digital cameras may be rather mind-boggling for the intermediate user and beauteous stimulating for most pros. Four key ongoing camera developments that are likely to further improve the procedure of photography:

1. Greater solution from even the simplest, low cost camera models

2. Usage in any type of lighting conditions,

3. Compatibility all over a range of software, hardware and effigy types

4. Rich colors and tone

While the higher-end digital evolution continues, the prices of the simple camera have crashed to such an extent that even children and teens are proud owners of uncomplicated cameras. The camera and photography interest starts young and this brings about a veritably huge audience base for the camera industry.

And allround history, it is apparent that the endeavor of researchers and developers has been to make the camera available to a wide section of society. Without camera engineering science and photography, the other key developments of cinema and TV would have been delayed and what a boring place the world would have been without TV and films!!

ReviewDisplaying the latest in contemporary aesthetics, Corelle’s Square Round line comprises of square plates and bowls with rounded corners, delineated round centers, and subtly lifted rims. The Simple Lines pattern presents a white background minimally graced by various swooping thin lines of black. The effect is at once stark yet artistically appealing, creating a dinnerware pattern that may be used for everyday, year-round dining or saved for particular occasion entertaining.

Like all Corelle dinnerware, Simple Lines is made of laminated layers of glass that manufacture unbelievable strength while being very lightweight, thin, and stackable. Moreover, because the enamel pigments are fired onto the dinnerware, the design won’t fade or scratch off over time. This 16-piece set is comprised of four of each of the following: 10-1/4-inch dinner plate, 8-3/4-inch lunch plate, 22-ounce cereal or soup bowl, and 12-ounce porcelain mug. While sudden changes in temperature will have to be avoided, Corelle Square Round is safe for the microwave, oven, and dishwasher, and is covered by a 3-year warranty versus chips and breakage. –Ann Bieri

The old set start getting gray and streaky as if the years of utensils against the surface in daily use finally took a toll. When I decided to replace that set, I had no doubt that it would be with another set of Corelle. It is lightweight, dishwasher and microwave safe, is thin enough to not stack too high in the cabinet, and it stays nice looking even with heavy use.

This set arrived well packed, the Corelle box and bubble packing inside another box, and everything was intact. The plates are really big! We will probably end up using the lunch plates as dinner plates sometimes. The bowls also have a very large capacity, easily two cups.

One main difference between this set and my old one is the coffee cups are not the same material as the dishes… they used to be made of the same ‘vitrelle’ and now are porcelain. I like the new ones better; they have a little more heft and keep my coffee warmer longer, and they are more elegant than our regular old unmatched mugs.

I love the squared shape of all the pieces, even the cups are a bit square. Perhaps it is because of the shape that the pieces all seem to have so much capacity. I like this pattern, Simple Lines, because it is a simple contemporary desigh. If I have one complaint it would be that the lines don’t look solid and dark on the plates; in places the lines look like chalk stripes.

K. Herman
I love these plates – they are attractive and durable. In particular, the cups and bowls are good, practical sizes. My one complaint is that the black stripes are a different finish and rougher texture from the rest of the plate. Occasionally when a fork scrapes across one, we all get spine-tingles! If you are sensitive to this, you probably want to choose a different style. But I do highly recommend Corelle in general. My 5-yr-old cannot seem to destroy them (and he does try).

I am here to buy another (always compare prices).

I had Corelle growing up and liked the lightweight nature of it and the durability. However, the patterns were not so hot for a while. The newer patterns are great! I gave my old dishes to a college-bound relative when I got these. It was just too hard on my hands lifting 4 stacked stoneware plates from the diswasher to the cupboard.

FYI, and stoneware/porcelain/ceramic dishes with chips should be discarded as dirt/bacteria can get into the unglazed part and you can’t get it out. I don’t like taking chances with my family’s safety. I have never chipped a Corelle dish. My mother did drop one at walmart and it shattered into about a zillion shards, so it is possible.

The only bummer about this set is that the mugs ARE NOT corelle glass. They match but are ceramic. My old set had corelle mugs. The paint does look slightly different as it is on a different surface. The bowls also only have a black rim, too bad the lines aren’t on them. I do see they have added some companion pieces. Still waiting for smaller dessert/salad plates to match this set.

Nice everyday dishes that can take rough handling of a family.

1.	Which Christmas tree fact is NOT true?

A. Artificial Christmas trees have outsold real ones each year since 1991.

B. Nova Scotia leads the world in exporting Christmas trees.

C. Franklin Pierce was the initial president to decorate an official White House Christmas tree.

D. The Christmas tree was chosen to represent this holy holiday because it’s shape points the way to heaven.

D. The Christmas tree was chosen to represent this holy holiday because it’s shape points the way to heaven.

QQ: OK, so perchance it’s true, but the QuizQueen can’t prove that fact, as reasonable as it sounds, because it wasn’t in any of the creative writing of recognized artisti value she dug up for this quiz.

2. Can you name the popular Christmas song that was in truth written for Thanksgiving?

A. Jingle Bells

B. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

C. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

D. Away in the Manger

A.	Jingle Bells

QQ: The song was composed in 1857 by James Pierpont, and was in the first place called One Horse Open Sleigh. When you think regarding it, the words make a lot more sense that way…

3. Electric Christmas tree lights were primary applied in what year?

A. 1865

B. 1895

C. 1905

D. 1932

B. 1895

QQ: American Ralph E. Morris had the bright idea that electric Christmas lights would be safer than using candles.

4. Good King Wenceslas was king of what country?

A. Bohemia

B. England

C. Germany

D. Morocco

A. Bohemia.

QQ: Who knows why those Bohemians always get such a bad rep? Although, history has it that Wenceslas, who lived in the 10th century, was only a Duke, not a King at all.

5. In 8971, the New York Sun newspaper wrote a famous response to a little girl’s question: “Yes, _______, there is a Santa Claus.” Can you name that girl?

A. Mary

B. Charlotte

C. Vidalia

D. Virginia

D. Virginia

QQ: Virginia O’Hanlon to be exact! Shame on you, if you missed it.

6. Can you name Scrooge’s dead business collaborator from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol?”

A. Jacob Marley

B. Tiny Tim

C. Bob Cratchett

D. Old William

A.	Jacob Marley

QQ: The introductory of four spirits to appear to Scrooge that fateful Christmas Eve was that of Jacob Marley, his old business partner.

7. One of the pagan traditions that Christians have integrated into their Christmas celebration includes hanging mistletoe. Which of these is NOT a former pagan belief?

A. Ancient Europeans believed that the mistletoe plant kept magical powers to bestow life and fertility as well as protect versus disease.

B. French girls applied to slip sections of mistletoe beneath their pillows to dream of their future husbands.

C. The Celts believed mistetoe brought with regards to peace and goodwill.

D. Northern Europeans related mistletoe with the Norse goddess of love, Freya and produced the habit of kissing beneath mistletoe branches.

B. French girls employed to slip sectionalizations of mistletoe under their pillows to dream of their future husbands.

QQ: That was a tough one, wasn’t it? The QuizQueen is soooo clever…

8. While today the Christmas tree is an enduring symbol of the season, it wasn’t always a holiday tradition. Which historical fact is NOT true?

A. According to legend, Martin Luther, the founder of German protestantism, while walking through the forest on Christmas Eve was so moved by the starlit fir trees he brought one indoors and beautified it with candles to remind his children of God’s creation.

B. In 1841, Prince Albert of Germany gave his wife, Queen Victoria of England, a gift of a Christmas tree. This was reputedly the firstborn Christmas tree in England, but the habit quickly spread.

C. German immigrants brought the Christmas tree to Europe, the United States and Canada, where it soon became a usual tradition.

D. On a bet, 11-year-old P.T. Barnum started hawking trees in Connecticut in 1821, telling his marks they were all the rage. Soon the fashion disseminate allround the country and it became tradition, thence establishing his maxim “There is a sucker born each minute.”

QQ: Good ‘ole P.T. Barnum did try to trade just in regards to everything, and may in fact have sold Christmas trees, but I doubt he sold them at that age!

9. Many persons are intimate with the term “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” but not everyone knows where it originated. Can you pick out the right explanation?

A. The Twelve Days of Christmas represents the number of days Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem.

B. The Twelve Days of Christmas represents the length of time that the three wise men from the East traveled to reach Baby Jesus after his birth.

C. The Twelve Days of Christmas represents the number of reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh.

D. The Twelve Days of Christmas represents the length of time required to celebrate Good King Wenceslas’ birthday.

B. The Twelve Days of Christmas represents the length of time that the three wise men from the East traveled to reach Baby Jesus after his birth.

QQ: And you thought you didn’t learn anything practical in Sunday school?

10. Who hasn’t wondered what “wassail” is and why persons would request it at Christmas. Let’s see if you may guess…

A. Wassail comes from the Old Norse “Ves Heill” and means “to be of good health,” so when neighbors would visit on Christmas Eve they would drink to each other’s health.

B. Wassail comes from the Old German “Ves Heill” and means “to keep away from Hell,” so loved ones would share this sentiment with each other on Christmas Eve in preparation for the birth of Christ.

C. Wassail comes from the Old Celtic “Ves Heill” and means “drink up” so is naturally affiliated with all party occasions.

D. Wassail comes from the Old English “Ves Heill” and means drink of the angels and finally became related with Christmas.

A. Wassail comes from the Old Norse “Ves Heill” and means “to be of good health,” so when neighbors would visit on Christmas Eve they would drink to each other’s health.

QQ: Sometimes The QuizQueen may be very, very silly.

11. Everyone loves to receive them, but dreads performing the annual holiday ritual of sending Christmas cards. So who do we NOT have to thank/blame?

A. Medieval Europeans who counterchanged wood prints of religious themes for Christmas.

B. English illustrator John Calcott Horsley who developed the firstborn modern Christmas card in 1843 that depicted a family celebration with the caption “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You.”

C. German-American printer Louis Prang who made advances in color lithography permitting him to mass develop colorful Christmas cards in 1875.

D. Desmond Hallmark who had a surplus of cards left over from Arbor Day depicting a fir tree and decisive to offload them by the box by plainly printing Merry Christmas all over the trees in red ink.

D. Desmond Hallmark who had a surplus of cards left over from Arbor Day depicting a fir tree and decisive to offload them by the box by plainly printing Merry Christmas all over the trees in red ink.

QQ: While all except poor Desmond may be kept responsible, The QuizQueen genuinely blames Louis!

12. Remember that fuscia sweater Aunt Edna knitted for your Christmas present last year? Don’t blame Aunt Edna, she’s not the one who started the Christmas gift giving tradition, so who is?

A. Those three wise men who visited the stable where Jesus was born.

B. The ancient Romans who interchanged gifts to fetch good fortune for the new year.

C. Mark Antony who was always looking for new ways to please Cleopatra.

D. The ancient Greeks who sought to placate the gods on Mount Olympus.

B. The ancient Romans who interchanged gifts to fetch good fortune for the new year.

QQ: Of course, Aunt Edna is to blame for choosing that color. You can’t blame the Romans for that.

Music and musical instruments are an exceedingly important part of humane history. The use of rhythm and song has long been used to express meaning, and sentiment and accompany rituals.

Music has been part of humane life for as long as any person may trace. Early civilizations of people applied music as a way to commune and express feelings. Out of all of the musical instruments that we see in our society today and use on a regular basis, there is one instrument that stands out in musical history, the drum.

The history of drums is interesting and unique. When you closely question or examine this instrument historically, you will find that drums have had a place in almost all cultures around the globe. Variations of drums and drum sets occurred in some dissimilar cultures, the popular assortment of a drum consisted plainly of a hollowed out log or gourd with a piece of skin stretched taunt. Different sizes of gourds and logs invented dissimilar sounds and beats.

The African Influence

In most African cultures, drums were very indispensable in the use of rituals and religious ceremonies. The persons of dissimilar African tribes relied on the use of drums to express themselves and when the slave trade began, the drums made the traveling all over the ocean as well.

African drums and drummers provided a distinguishable sound that to a considerable degree influenced Western Rock and Roll music. Those same rhythms and beats still provide a strong influence in today’s sounds.

The Early Drum Set

When it was came upon that one player could play two or more drums at the same time, humans started placing groups of drums together for one musician to play. These groups were comprised of an assimilation of drums of dissimilar cultures and from all around the globe. Cymbals and tom tom drums were brought in from China and the size was adjusted to concede for ease of play when played with drumsticks.

In the early 1930′s, musicians tardily ran into with the proper drum placement and a lot of practice, one musician could handle a set of drums, and an entire band of drum players was not required anymore. Thus, a basic kit evolved and took place.

In An Early Kit

The early drum kits were simple in their design, they specifically consisted only of:

1) A bass and foot pedal

2) A snare drum

3) Tom Toms

4) A hi hat cymbal

5) One or two sets of hanging cymbals

The Evolution Of The Drum Set

In the 1930′s the drum set was to a great extent influenced by the sounds of the time, and the early forms of Rock and Roll music. The sounds had a strong basic beat backing them.

In the 1950′s as Rock and Roll music begun to develop, the sounds became more complex and likewise, the drum sets became more evolved, with new additions added to them. Rockers begun expanding the drum kits adding more cymbals and tom toms drums to them. In addition, as time went on, electronic drums were added to the drum kits as well. All of these additions permitted the musicians to exaggerate their sounds and diversify their music.

Types Of Drum Kits

In the past, as drums evolved and drum kits developed, new companies were formed and productions were fine-tuned and made better. The Ludwig Drum Company is known as one of the most influential and historical drum companies of our time.

The Ludwig drum company was started by a young man who enjoyed playing the drums. He could not find a bass pedal that would hold up to his intense drumming style. He shopped around everyplace and could not find an suitable pedal, so he fashioned one out of wood. The pedal was superior to anything else on the market. His brother, felt that an even more inviolable pedal could be produced out of a metal product, so they teamed up to give rise to an even better bass pedal. Thus, the Ludwig Drum Company was born.

Ringo Starr, the famous drummer for The Beatles employed a Ludwig drum set and was known for preferring the Ludwig drums. He is said to still own the original Ludwig drum set that he played with the Beatles.

There have been a great deal of other types of drum kits and company names that have played an essential and influential role in the history of drums. Yamaha, Pearl, Tama and Gretsch are all widely known and esteemed brand names whose drums and drum kits have helped form the drum set, as we know it today.

The Future For Drums

What does the future hold for drum sets? No one may be sure. However, with the creation of more and more technology, we may be sure that the sounds will evolve even more. A combining of new sounds and established will always be found. And the limit for drum set creation will plainly be the imagination of the musicians.

The Cat in the Hat, was written by Dr. Seuss in 1957. It is the introductory aspect of the Cat in the Hat reputation who likewise appeared in four further and added books: The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, The Cat in the Hat Song Book, The Cat’s Quizzer, and I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!.

The story is of two children and there cynical talking goldfish who are left alone in the house when their parents leave, it is raining so the kids are left inside with not one thing to do. The Cat in the Hat comes along with thing one and thing two and proceeds to undertake and cheer up the children with a huge amount of chaos resulting.

The book itself is considered an impressive feat of skill, this is because not only does it keep to a rigorous triple meter as well as little vocabulary, but it also tells an agreeably diverting story in the process. Dr. Seuss claimed that it took him almost 9 months to write this book as his editor required him to use a list of words no longer than 223 words. This list came from the sight vocabulary learning method applied in the schools. Dr. Seuss himself never liked this method, as he preferent the phonics method, but wrote the books because he felt there were not sufficient agreeably diverting stories being used to instruct children.

The most apparent thing to note with regards to The Cat in the Hat, is it’s immense popularity. It has been a cherished children’s story that even adults find pleasurable for more 5 decades. Not only that, but a major motion picture was freed in 2003. Due to it is tremendous popularity, timeless quality, and the huge amount of material available, it is a reasonably fantasti choice for the theme of a children’s party.

The history, meaning and symbolism of nautical star tattoos is

a hotly debated topic. Today some dissimilar groups have

adopted the Nautical star tattoo as a symbol for their own

movement and they have all ascribed their own meaning and

history to the symbol. Thus has lead to a wide

disagreement as the the meaning of the tattoo.Historically

most every one agrees that Sailors were the introductory people to get

nautical star tattoos. In fact the very word nautical

relates back to sailing. So this connection has been

pretty with resolute determination established. Most persons would agree the

sailors were a pretty superstitious group throughout history and

sailor lore abounds with superstitious and fantastical stories

of life and death and being lost at sea. Early on

sailors navigated by the stars at night and the north star

became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you

know where the north star is you may point your ship in the

right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol

for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding

ones path in life. Therefore a good deal of sailors would tattoo

nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck symbol in

hopes of returning home.

However their progressed day meaning is a more debated topic.

Many believe that groups including gay and lesbians, punk

rockers and those in the military have adopted the nautical

star tattoo as a very essential symbol. The diversity of

these three groups has lead a heap of to argue the meaning of their

tattoos.

For the military the connection is pretty plainly point

back to the early sailors and the symbolism and meaning is the

same as the early sailors. Many military humans get a

nautical star tattoo as a symbol for finding ones path home

safely. Of course this may also include more

symbolically just finding ones way in life.

Here is a quote we found from a fellow member of the armed

services and his interpretation of the tattoo:

“I am in the United States Army, an MP who searched towns

and villages for Al Quida and insurgents. I was in Iraq for 1

year. I have a red and black nautical star on my wrist. The

reason I got it was because when I was out there, I felt it

was a guide to guide me home to my family safely. I got it so

that it would remind me that I am going to make it to see my

son grow up. I am not gay, it doesn’t matter what you believe

it represents, it means something dissimilar for everyone. Out

in the desert, I would look up at the stars and think with regards to

home. So any individual may think what they want to, that is what it

means to me. “

Punk rockers have likewise adopted this as a standard symbol to

have tattooed. The punk motion traces it is history and

use of the nautical star tattoo back to Sailor Jerry.

Sailor Jerry is throughout history one one of the most widely known and esteemed tattoo

artists ever. He was well known for his modern and

“cool” designs. Punks have taken this symbol and it has

very much the same meaning of finding one way in life.

Being the rugged individualists type Punks are drawing to the

symbolism of true north and finding one own distinctive way in

life. So the Nautical star has become a symbol for this.

You see numerous punk bands that have full sleeve tattoos

typically incorporate nautical star tattoos either on their

elbows or elsewhere.

The lesbian and gay connection is the one that does not

seem so apparent at first. Historically back in the

1940′s and 50′s when substitute lifestyles were not the norm

and often women had to hide their substitute selections they

would sport a concealed nautical star. Often they would get

the star tattoo done on the inside of their wrist where it

could effortlessly be concealed by a watch for the duration of the day but shown off

in the evening when out on the town. Today galore lesbians

where the nautical star tattoo to show their connection with

their early pioneering sisters. Here is a little

evidence to help my points.

“Here’s the passage (with a lot of pieces dropped) from “Boots

of Leather, Slippers of Gold: The History of a Lesbian

Community” by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Madeilne D. Davis

copyright 1993 p. 189.

(talking with regards to the 1940′s and 1950′s):

“…During this same time period, the cultural push to be

identified as lesbians- or at least different- all the time

was so powerful that it generated a new form of identification

among the tough bar lesbians: a star tattoo on the top of the

wrist, which was normally covered by a watch. This was the

first symbol of community identity that did not rely on

butch-fem imagery. We may trace this phenomenon back to an

evening of revelry in the late 1950′s, when a few butches

trooped over to “Dirty Dick’s” tattoo parlor on Chippewa

Street and had the tiny blue five-pointed star put on their

wrists. Later, a heap of of the fems of this group likewise go the idea

one night and did it…The community views the tattoo as a

definite mark of identification…”the Buffalo police knew

[that] the persons that had the stars on their wrist were

lesbians and they had their names and so forth. That it was an

identity thing with the gay community, with the lesbian

community”. The fact that the star tattoo was invented by those

who were with resolute determination into roles, in fact by the group that was

considered the butchy butches and their fems, suggest that the

force to assert lesbian identity was strong sufficient to break

through the existent traditions of boldness based in butch-fem

roles. The stars presage the methods of identity produced by

gay liberation. In fact, the mark has become something of a

tradition in local circles and has seen a revival since the

1970s.”

This meaning of the symbol has of course produced a lot of

problems and arguments amid the other two groups of bearers

of nautical stars. Most puck and military persons do not

want to have a nautical star that points back to anything from

the lesbian motion so galore will say that there is no

connection there and this is false.

Here is a quote from another armed forces fellow member with regards to the

symbolism of the nautical star among the gay community:

“This “gay symbol” is a load of hooey that someone made up

VERY recently. The nautical star tattoo has been around closely

as long as tattooing itself. The late Celts (or early Irish,

depending on your view of World History) were said to have

been the original to have the tattoos, though proof of it

being used on ships in Spain has been found pre-dating the

Irish claim.

As a Marine, it’s a very commonplace symbol amidst us if

we have been share of a Boat Raid company, red for port, green

for starboard on varying parts of the body. On ship, I saw

about a million dissimilar variations on the Sailors I was was

serving with, evidently harking back to the sailor roots.”

Here is a quote from a punk rocker and his sensations when it comes to

the symbolism of the tattoo:

“what idiots..even the military boys do not recognise what it

really means….JUST SO YOU ALL KNOW!!!!!it was used by OLD

sailors.. and the symbol represents North on a Map …and it

is the North Star the sailors would use it as a baring to get

home….you may find it on Really actually old maps and old navy

vessels… Punk Rock.. well we use it because we may and

because Sailor Jerry made the coolest tattoos who started

putting them on everyone.. my grandfather even had one thence

being employed as a traditionalisti icon”

It just goes to show that when the same powerful symbol is

used over and over again over decades of time it may taken on

very dissimilar significances for dissimilar groups. So all of

those that you see sporting a nautical star tattoo might not

all have the same interpretation of it is symbolism.

So do you have a nautical star tattoo or think when it comes to

getting one in the future? Which meaning of the symbol

will you get the nautical star for? As long as you recognise

what the symbolism behind the star is for and you have gotten

it for the right reason to either help the lesbian motion

or as a symbol to finding your way!
