DRESS SHIRT TIPS Successful digitizing and embroidery

WHEN TO CHOOSE EMBROIDERY

The “business casual” environs that led to relaxed dress codes for the workplace starting in the 90′s has changed the way America shows up for work. Jeans and sweatshirts are not unusual. However, the pendulum appears to be swinging back toward a more polished, upscale aspect in business apparel, particularly since selfassurance in corporations has slipped lately with the trade scandals and folding dot-coms. With this change, the dress shirt, a established “dress for success” item in a man’s closet, is enjoying a resurgence of popularity. It tops the charts when a professional effigy is important. The addition of an embroidered logo provides upscale corporate identity and with a little forethought may add style and interest as well.

The classic dress shirt is a long-sleeved, front-button shirt with tails. It is available in a lot of luxurious fabrics and fun colors today. However, it is best to think “conservative” when a shirt is to include an embroidered logo or design. Collar styles include: Straight, Spread or British Spread, Button-down, Curved, Tab and Banded. Your choice of style may depend on your customer’s preferences, but the best bet is to stick with a straight collar (the standard for business today) and a solid, basic color. Long sleeves with button cuffs finish the look and provide more originative chances for embroidery. For hotel uniforms or other functional work wear that will be worn in hot, humid climates, short sleeves, of course, are the logical choice.

LOCATION

Left and Right Chest – A company logo is normally embroidered on the left chest pocket of a dress shirt. Personalization, such as an employee name, is embroidered on the right. Keep designs little sufficient to fit comfortably in the space provided. Smaller is better, exceptionally on a shirt pocket. (Be conscious that as the logo or design is scaled down in size, text size will be scaled down and may become too little to digitize properly. Re-designing the logo may be necessary to keep text no less than 3/16″ or ¼” in height.)

Collar – The left front of the collar presents a stylish probability to add a distinctive design or message on a dress shirt. It is being used by private schools today to decorate children’s uniforms when sweaters and vests may potentially conceal a left chest application.

Back – Beneath the collar (in the yoke area) may add potpourri to design placement. One thoughtfulness for this area is to stay clear from designs that could be irritating for the wearer due to backing included on the inside of the garment. Certain designs that require heavy backing may not be advisable.

Cuff – A tone-on-tone logo or stylized initials on a shirt cuff may provide another subtle, classy form of corporate identity.

FABRIC

When we think of a dress shirt fabric, we in general think of woven cotton (such as that found in an oxford shirt) or a cotton polyester blend. However, dress shirts also come in mixes of polyester and cotton twill (common for industrial and mercantile work wear), silk, the newer micro fiber fabrics and a polyester/rayon that looks and drapes like silk (this fabric was introduced in women’s shirts and has not so long ago been integrated into men’s shirts). Some dress shirts worn by industrial and mercantile work staff are being invented in wickable fabrics with a high synthetic fabric content. Wickable fabrics originated in costume designed for uttermost sporting events like mountain climbing and has moved into the shirts designed for work wear. The fabric transfers moisture from the skin to the outside of the cloth where it may evaporate. This feature helps the wearer to maintain a more even body temperature, thence reducing uneasiness and bettering performance. The key here is to select fabric that will aid the function and effigy your client is looking for. Thinner fabrics may cost less, but they don’t maintain their fit and shape as well as higher quality fabrics You will remunerate a bit more for a quality fabric, but it will also last longer and provide a polished, professional aspect that keeps your clients coming back for more.

THREAD

With it is vibrant colors and high sheen, the preferent choice of thread for dress shirts that will make their aspect in the boardroom or sales office is rayon. Keep in mind that a cooler temperature with color-safe bleach will be necessitated to safeguard it is color and sheen.

When shirts will be washed often in hot water or with big amounts of chlorine bleach (as for staff at a restaurant or hotel), the best choice, with it is strength and resistance to fading, is polyester.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

For industrial or mercantile uniforms, the trend is moving away from the use of name tags and patches toward embroidering direct on the fabric. The result is a less clinical, more personalized, professional image. One thing to keep in mind, however, is when shirts are acquired offshore, they may have pocket placements angled incorrectly or offset to left or right. Lining up a logo is difficult in such a case. We suggest ordering a shirt sample from an offshore vendor prior to placing your order. Hold off showing a catalog effigy of the shirt to your customer, if at all possible, until you receive an actual sample. If you find yourself in a circumstance where shirts have been delivered with pockets misaligned or offset, find an embroiderer who will work with you to remunerate for the misalignment by modifying the angle or placement of the embroidery.

Letter size is always an important contemplation when creating a design for the embroidery process. Script or serif fonts are not advisable for little text. For best results, use capitalized letters in a sans serif font such as Arial. The minimum letter heights listed beneath are for sans serif, block letters, sewn in a satin stitch.

Suggested minimum Letter Height by Fabric:

Pique, Terry cloth, Fleece ….. 1/ 4″

Twill, Most other fabrics …… 3/16″

MARKETING IDEAS

When the protocol for business attire relaxed, the door opened for new and originative ways to embellish promotional business apparel. Take vantage of that prospect by thinking outside the box with originative solutions to a company’s identification challenges. In cooler temperatures where sweaters and vests are a mainstay for the duration of the winter months, you could suggest a coordinating shirt and sweater or vest combination. A stylish version of the company logo may be added to the left front collar of a dress shirt and a usual left chest version embroidered on the sweater or vest. This ensures a visual display of the corporate logo with or without the sweater or vest.

Another idea is to add a vender logo to a secondary location, such as beneath the back collar, on the cuff or upper sleeve (on a short-sleeved shirt). A company may be capable to attain coop dollars to support fund the cost of a company shirt with this arrangement. A shirt retailer, for example, could have the logo of a crucial shirt provider embroidered on their staff’s sleeve or cuff and their own logo embroidered on the left chest pocket.

5A LITTLE CLARITY IS NEEDED
By peacekeeper
I purchased this hawk last year and I am very happy with it. I too looked at the mixed reviews and then did my homework. It needs pointing out that SOG have made two versions of this hawk. The first was with a hardwood handle. I believe the bad reviews are probably from people who bought these. I imagine that is why SOG came out with another version which featured a plastic handle. This is the type I purchased. The design is the same as the earlier model, but the new handle makes all the difference. I have abused mine by cutting tree limbs and throwing, and apart from a few scuffs and dirt, the head still sits snug like when it first arrived. Granted you could purchase a super tomahawk that would cost a huge amount, but for the price this hawk suits me fine. Apart from function it is also a nice looking tool/weapon which is suitable for both CQB or light breach work. As another reviewer stated, the sheath is good as it is one of the faster to draw from sheaths I have seen, and allows it to drop straight in to your hand. If money is no object then go for the super deluxe models being sold, but if that’s not the case you won’t be dissapointed with this product. Just make sure you purchase the newer style plastic handle.

5sog fusion tomahawk
By JEFF MURRAY
Amazon will not let me put the video in, so go to youtube type in Sog Fusion under handbook live. The video says it all.

It obviously would not take the abuse that my K5 tactical spike does, but I see no breakage with this product. . It will go through cinder blocks, bricks, I slammed it through a truck hood. A 63 ford truck hood to be exact. It will knock out glass and clear the sill. It will chop 2×4′s in half. It would be a very useful entry tool, (simply drive the spike next to the door latch and kick). It will puncture tires so a suspect could not get away in a car. It will split smaller pieces of green wood. The hawk face is quite sharp and maintains a good edge even when chopping edgewise into heavy gauge sheet metal. The face is not down swept as a fighting hawk would be. But it would still hold it’s own. With proper technique applied you could chop into the spine the throat and still hook and disarm an opponent. The spike is not sharpened all of the way around. It has more of a chisel edge that is great for chopping holes in cinder blocks to have firing holes to engage enemy targets. I have had no problem with using this product as it was intended. Remember this is a breacher/ extraction tool. You wouldn’t use a screw driver as a hammer would you? Don’t answer that. It held up very well to my abuse. To me this is a self defense weapon and tactical breeching tool. The lightness of the handle and it being head heavy gives it a balance and allows you to get a decent swing from the hawk. This is definitely not a slashing type of hawk. To be a good slasher the hawk face needs to have a belly or down sweep. In the future from Sog I would like to see a better head design. Get rid of the holes, give us the full weight and a better head attachment. But let’s be honest. If you want an axe by an axe. If you want a thrower by a one piece Gil Hibben. This stands up well to the everyday challenges presented to it. If your handle broke? Send it back and get another one. The Chinese QC is iffy at best. Americans should know that by now. Send it back and get another one or order the American tomahak CQC $295.00 or in my oppinion the best tomahawk on the market today is the K5 tactical Spike $199.00. In my opinion ( former Marine) 14 years. I have used tomahawks throughout my life. In service and out. This is a very decent hawk for the price. I would recommend this as a entry level hawk to anyone interested in owning one but does not have 200 or 300 dollars to spend. You get the same features in the hawk that the higher priced ones have.

5Great product!
By Big Fred
Anyone looking for a well made and well designed hand axe for up close and personal nastiness, look no further. This is it! SOG knows what they are doing. The design is all business. The axe blade comes shaving sharp so take this as a warning. They have even ground the upper and lower blade points to a needle sharpness. The oppossing pick end is ground from six angles making it very functional. The pick is flared at the end so that it will create a larger wound channel and remove easily. The axe head is securely attached to the metal handle shaft with 4 star screws and there is a metal reinforcing ring around the area where the metal shaft is joined to the nylon handle. The weight and balance (towards the axe head) are perfect. They get kudos for the scabbard design. It is intended for a fignting axe. It drops the axe into your hand from the bottom opening scabbard with one handed ease. Looks, feels, and functions as a weapon should. I should have known as I own other SOG knives and they are all quality products. Even though this is one of their import products you can see it is still SOG all the way. Exactly what I was looking for!
