The history of cookies goes back to the time of Alexander the Great, and perchance even earlier. It is no wonder there are so a lot of varieties of these easy to carry treats. Pinwheel cookies are no exception. Whether you are combining two dissimilar colors or flavors of dough, or rolling dough with a filling, these cookies are beauteous to look at and tasty treats to eat.

For a filled Christmas Pinwheel Cookie try this. You will need:

1 1/2 cup craisins (dried cranberry raisins)

1 cup pistachios

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup sugar

2 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Put the craisins and nuts in a feed processor and chop coarsely. Just use the pulse a few times. Place this mixture in a little saucepan with the water and 1/4 cup of sugar. Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, until the mixture just comes to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool.

Cream the butter, sugars, egg and vanilla. Sift the flour, soda and, salt, together and add to the creamed mixture. You will have to get a medium soft dough. Chill 30 minutes.

Roll the dough out amidst sheets of wax paper. You want a huge rectangle. Spread the nut and craisin mixture evenly all over the dough, almost to the edge. You will roll from the long side so the filling may extend to the edges of the short sides and regarding 1/8 inch from the edges of the long sides. Starting at one long side, use the wax paper to help you roll the dough. Press the seam slightly. I use a fork to add a little ornamental edge. Just gently press the fork all over the length of the seam to invent little indentations, much like you might do on a pie crust.

Wrap the cookie-roll in wax paper and chill until firm. When ready to bake, Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Cut into 1/4 inch slices. Bake on a greased or parchment lined cookie sheet.

Here is a tip. If you use a new, clean, piece of dental floss as your knife you won’t end up with cookies that are flat on one side. Simply slide a length of the floss under the roll. pull the ends up and over the dough and cross them, like you were in regards to to tie a shoelace. Pull and the floss will evenly cut through the dough. Move down and repeat. Toss the floss when done.

Bake the cookies in regards to 8-10 minutes or until just starting to brown. Wait one minute before removing to a wire rack to cool. You may wish to lightly sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture, or confectioners sugar before serving. Santa loves these and the sugar-coating my disclose his true identity.

You may likewise make Pinwheel cookies by mixing up two batches of your favored refrigerator cookie dough. You may even use the packaged cookie mixes if you like. My family loves old-fashioned sugar cookies. Tint one batch with feed coloring. Roll each into a rectangle and layer one atop the other. Roll, chill, cut, bake and serve. Be adventuresome. Spread numerous raspberry jam amongst layers of plain and green tinted dough for a festive cookie.

If you are in a hurry or are pressed for time, you may determine to make drop cookies your choice. There are a lot of to choose from. Try these delicate cookies. They have a big pecan flavor and are a outstanding addition to a cookie tray as well as a distinguishable and welcome hostess gift.

For these Pecan Lace Cookies You will need:

1 cup finely chopped pecans

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1/2 cup butter,melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract, use pure extract if you can. It is a divergence in taste.

1/2 cup pecan halves for garnish

Using a feed processor, routine the pecans and sugar until finely ground. Use the pulse. You don’t want pecan butter. Place in a bowl and stir in the sifted flour, powder, and salt.

Prepare your cookie sheets by lining with foil and greasing or use parchment paper sprayed with a cooking spray. You could also use a silicon pad.

In another bowl beat the egg. Add the melted butter and vanilla. Stir into flour mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls regarding 3 inches apart onto the prepared pans. Press 1/2 of a pecan into the center of each cookie.

Bake at 325 degrees F for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown and ‘lacy’ in appearance. Cookies must be permitted to cool on the pans before removing.

Optional: You may conservatively remove the warm cookies while they are still soft and pliable by rolling them lightly around the handle of a wooden spoon. Slide them off gently and grant to finish cooling. When they are cooled they may be served with a filling of whipped topping mixed with fruit, or any other filling of your choice. IF you choose this option, keep in mind that you will need to fill and serve immediately. Cookies will get soggy if left to sit with fillings. Store flat among sheets of wax paper in an air tight container.

One of the reasons we bake all those cookies is because we want to percentage our love with our family, and lets face it, home-baked cookies are one of the favored ways to show them you care. But, today it is on occasion hard to find the time to bake. Here is a way to portion the love of a home-baked cookie, without having to do the baking.

Christmas Cookies in a Jar.

When you can’t bake, or if you want to send cookies effortlessly and not have your recipient end up with a box of crumbs, try this recipe. You may adjust it to your bestloved recipe as well. Just omit the wet ingredients, layer the arid ingredients, and include a recipe card with instructions.

In a beauteous Jar layer

1/3 cup sugar

1/3 cup packed brown sugar (pack to measure then break up in the jar)

3/4 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/8 teaspoon baking soda and 1/8 teaspoon salt sifted together

1 cup quick cooking oats

1 cup dried cranberries

1 cup vanilla chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped nuts

From your computer you may print out a pretty recipe card, or you may write out the directions by hand. I prefer the hand-written version. It is a little more personal, but the choice is yours. Here is what you must include on the recipe card for these cookies.

To prepare these cookies please add 1/2 cup melted butter, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla which to the contents of the jar in a big bowl. Stir well and chill for 30 minutes. When you are ready, bake the cookies at 375 degrees F. You will have to drop them by tablespoons onto an ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8 – 10 minutes or until browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.

This gift will keep for up to 6 months if sealed air tight, so when you have a little time earlier in the year you may make up a few of these and store in your pantry until gift giving time comes around. You may also mix up these ‘cookie mixes’ and keep on hand for those emergencies when you just gotta have a cookie but you didn’t get a probability to shop for that missing ingredient.

These cookies in a jar are likewise great additions to a goodies basket. You might want to consider creating various dissimilar versions and make a cookie basket to give as a gift. Tuck into a huge mixing bowl with a lot of wooden spoons, a pot holder and stack on a cookie sheet. Wrap with a pretty ribbon and any cook would be thrilled. You might even want to tuck in galore home-bakes samples.

These recipes are basics. With a little imagination you may turn them into dissimilar variations and construct a platter full of ‘different’ cookie with minimal effort. And don’t forget to get the kids and other family members involved. Making cookies is veritably one of the joys we portion for the duration of the winter holiday season. Christmas cookies aren’t just for Christmas, they are good year-round, for all holidays, and exceptionally good for a smile. Oh, don’t forget to leave a few for Santa. (He likes the Pinwheel kind).

There are a great deal of great reasons for creating a gender-neutral nursery for your new baby. Whether it is because you’re waiting to find out your baby’s gender, you want a theme that may suit whatsoever other children come along, you’re having twins, or if you’re just not into the “baby boy” or “baby girl” themes, here are numerous great ways to invent fun nurseries that work perfectly for a boy, or a girl.

Stripes

Striped nurseries are very modern and may be suitable with a outstanding selection of colors to welcome a little boy or a little girl. Some great color themes include turquoise, brown and white; white, red, and taupe, or yellow, grey, and white.

Jungle

A jungle themed nursery is very fun to create. Think rainforest! Bright colors, trees, and exotic animals like toucans, monkeys, and tigers. Whether you buy pictures for the walls, or paint the animals directly onto the walls, it is sure to be rather the sight.

Black and White

Simple and stunning, black and white nurseries are very easy to create. Whether you use stripes, patchwork, or just a combining of black furniture and white furniture, your black and white nursery will be beautiful.

Teddy Bears

So classic, and traditional, a nursery filled with welcoming teddy bears is perfective for any baby. You may include teddy bear pictures, teddy bear blankets, and an array of bears that are little and big placed all around the room.

Stars

Creating a star-themed nursery may be very versatile. Whether you choose to go for the modern-looking 3-D tin stars, classic yellow stars, or white stars, you may find star-shaped lighting, star-studded bedding, and great wall decorations to be sure your child will grow up…a star!

Patriotic

Whether you choose the unfeigned American red, white and blue, patriotic theme, or your native land’s flag and colors, creating a patriotic-themed nursery allows your little one to grow up with a full sense of inheritance and patriotism.

World

You could likewise do a slight variation of patriotic and go for a ‘world traveler’ theme, with décor such as maps, globes, and pictures of landmarks from allround the world

Circles

Another fun variation of the classic stripes, circles are getting a nursery hit. You may consider a circle crib, circle decorations, or colored circles painted on the wall, along with a bold circle area rug, this nursery variation is sure to be a hit.

Under the Sea

Another nursery that includes a large total of bright colors! Create an underwater themed atmosphere in your nursery, and fill it with tropical fish, seaweed, starfish, and comforting ocean blue.

Artistic

Imagine a nursery finish with an easel, crayons, pallets, and outstanding works of art. Whether it’s innovative bright-colored art, or Picassos and Monets, your artistic-themed nursery is sure to inspire an artistic little one.

Numbers

Inspire a little mathematician by creating a nursery full of numbers. Maybe include an abacus, numbers on the walls, and numbered bedding.

ABC’s

A slight variation to the Numbers theme, an ABC theme is sure to inspire a new little writer. Complete with baby blocks, wooden letters painted on the walls, and famous literary works, you’ll have a large total of fun creating this nursery

Whatever theme you pick, your new baby’s nursery is sure to be stunning and perfective for a little boy, a little girl, or twins for years to come!

Red White Blue Patriotic Girls Tutu 2

This boldly cinematic trio of stories when it comes to love and loss from Krzysztof Kieślowski (The Double Life of Véronique) was a defining event of the art-house boom of the 1990s. The films were named for the colors of the French flag and stand for the tenets of the French Revolution—liberty, equality, and fraternity—but this scarcely begins to explain their enigmatic beauty and rich humanity. Set in Paris, Warsaw, and Geneva, and ranging from disaster to comedy, Blue, White, and Red (Kieślowski’s final film) thoroughly examine with artistic clarity a group of ambiguously interconnected people experiencing unfathomed personal disruptions. Marked by intoxicating cinematography and stirring performances by such actors as Juliette Binoche (Summer Hours), Julie Delpy (Before Sunset), Irène Jacob (The Double Life of Véronique), and Jean-Louis Trintignant (Z), Kieślowski’s Three Colors is a benchmark of contemporary cinema.

Blue In the desolating primary film of the Three Colors trilogy, Juliette Binoche gives a tour de strength performance as Julie, a woman reeling from the tragic deaths of her husband and young daughter. But Blue is more than just a blistering study of grief; it’s also a tale of liberation, as Julie learns truths when it comes to her late composer husband’s life and attempts to free herself of the past. Shot in icily gorgeous tones by Sławomir Idziak (The Double Life of Véronique) and set to an extraordinary operatic score by Zbigniew Preisner (The Secret Garden), Blue is an overpowering sensory experience.

White The most playful but likewise the grittiest of Kieślowski’s Three Colors films follows the adventures of Karol Karol (The Pianist’s Zbigniew Zamachowski), a Polish immigrant living in France. The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw after his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: he was never competent to carry out in bed) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol’s elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy in regards to the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie when it comes to twisted love. 1993

  2.0 surround

In French and Polish with English subtitles

Red Krzysztof Kieślowski closes his Three Colors trilogy in grand fashion with an incandescent meditation on fate and chance, starring Irène Jacob as a sweet-souled yet somber runway model in Geneva whose life intersects with that of a bitter retired judge, played by Jean Louis Trintignant. Their blossoming friendship forces each to open up in surprising aroused ways. Meanwhile, just down the street, a seemingly unrelated story of jealousy and betrayal unfolds. Red is an intimate look at forged connections and a splendid final statement from a noteworthy filmmaker at the height of his powers.

Even altho one may view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy on it is own, it seems foolish to do so; why buy the slacks rather of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing collaborator Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France’s bicentennial, the titles–and the themes of the films–come from the three colors of the French flag representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and daughter in an automati accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy regarding a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge versus his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbors in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski’s moralist view of humane nature and illumined by each title’s palate color.

The DVD set has a lot of extras disseminate all around the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new consultations with Kieslowski’s crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish conductor Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces when it comes to the experience. There’s an particular effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who passed away two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his respective career phases, consultations with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple–and wonderful–glimpses of the conductor at work. Excellent clear or deep perception is likewise provided by Dominique Rabourdin’s filmed “cinema lessons” with Kieslowski. Without observing any of his other films, this set illustrates the quality of being one of a kind of Kieslowski. –Doug Thomas

The late great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski cleverly “adapted” the three French ideals — liberty, equality, fraternity — into three thought-provoking modern-day dramas about people who cope with personal losses and tragedies. In BLUE, the first of the trilogy, a widow tries to set herself free (and gain liberty) from her emotional baggages. The second film, WHITE, is about a jilted man’s outrageous plot to get even (thus, equality) with his ex-wife. The last film, RED, which is also Kieslowski’s final film before he died in 1996, is about a lonely old man who is embittered by the memories of his youth and finds accidental companionship (fraternity) with a young model. All three films are understated in their tone, economical in their dialogs, elliptical in their editing and plotting (there are some mind-boggling flashbacks and flash forwards in WHITE), and haunting in their atmosphere.

The films regard the three French ideals quite indirectly, and in fact more and more so as the trilogy progresses. BLUE is the only one that deals with the ideal of “freedom” (albeit emotional freedom) in a concrete way, inviting us to ponder its meanings and its attainability. WHITE treats the concept of “equality” in a rather subversive and satiric manner, and it clearly wants us to rethink its meanings rather than accepting it at face value. And RED has to do with “fraternity” only circumstantially, and has more to do with the subject of destiny, and how our past is linked to our present. The three films are set not just in France, but also in Poland and Switzerland, and WHITE has primarily Polish dialogs. Hence, a sort of universality is intended.

The three films are also linked in various ways. All three films involve an unfaithful lover who dies, in one way or another. All three films involve a chance encounter between the distressed protagonist and a sympathetic observer — the widow and the mistress in BLUE, Karol and Mikolaj in WHITE, the retired judge and the model in RED. Both BLUE and WHITE are about people who move to new surroundings to escape from his or her troubled pasts. And RED, ironically, is about someone who never leaves his home in order to wallow in his self-pity.

Kieslowski had done this sort of thing before. In 1988, he “adapted” the Ten Commandments into ten one-hour, modern-day dramas, collectively titled DECALOGUE, that invite us to rethink the meanings of those principles. In the segment for “Thou Shalt Not Steal,” for instance, we witness the kidnapping (the theft) of a child from her adopted parents by her natural mother, who thinks she has a right to her custody. Thus, it turns clear-cut moral ideals into real-world dramas that have no clear-cut solutions or judgments.

The THREE COLORS TRILOGY (as well as DECALOGUE) has the scope and richness that truly earn the films’ standing as one of the high points of modern cinematic achievements.

Criterion Blu-ray edition of THREE COLORS offers an improved video transfer over the 2003 Miramax/Buena Vista DVD edition. This is not merely due to the inherent advantage of high-def over standard-def, but also to the fact that Criterion created new remastered transfers that look much better than the old transfers. The Buena Vista edition looks good for its time, but compared to Criterion’s effort, the colors often look too warm and saturated, and details in the shadows are often obscured. In a trilogy where colors have great visual significance, the better video representation on the Criterion Blu-ray is much welcome and needed.

Criterion also offers DTS HD-MA 2.0 surround tracks for the three films, but you may need to do a bit of funky adjustments to get them to work. Note that these are 2.0, not 5.1 tracks. Criterion expects you to use Pro Logic Surround decoding on your audio receiver to turn the 2.0 tracks into surround tracks. However, older receivers, like mine, may not be able to apply Pro Logic to DTS audio. So what I did was I had my Blu-ray player first convert the DTS audio into PCM multi-channel audio and pass it to my receiver, and then I was able to apply Pro Logic to the PCM audio. To compound matters, the WHITE disc’s surround audio was encoded incorrectly, yielding 1.0 mono after applying Pro Logic. Criterion is currently fixing this problem, and will offer a replacement in December to those who already bought the set. Contact Criterion’s point man Jon Mulvaney ( mulvaney@criterion.com ) regarding the replacement. On the BLUE and RED discs, the surround tracks do work, and with much higher bit rate they do sound better than the surround tracks on the Buena Vista discs.

The fully-loaded Criterion set contains several new supplements, but is also missing a quite a few extras on the Buena Vista set.

Bad news first. The wonderful full-length audio commentaries by film professor Annette Insdorf on the Buena Vista set are gone. Also gone are most of the interviews done by MK2 (producer Marin Karmitz’s company) in 2001, with actresses Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, and Irene Jacob, editor Jacques Witta (for BLUE), and Karmitz (for BLUE and WHITE). Most of the MK2 featurettes are also gone: “A Discussion on Kieslowski’s Later Years”, “A Discussion on Working with Kieslowski”, “Behind the Scenes of White with Kieslowski”, and “Behind the Scenes of Red with Kieslowski”. Selected scenes commentaries by Delpy and Jacob are also gone. Also noticeably missing are two student films by Kieslowski: “Concert of Wishes” and “The Office”. All these valuable video and audio extras are NOT on the Criterion set. Needless to say, those who have the Buena Vista set should probably hold on to it.

The Criterion set does retain some of the old extras. It does have several of the MK2 featurettes: “Kieslowski’s Early Years”, “Reflections on BLUE” (featuring the cast and crew, Insdorf, film critic Geoff Andrew, and film director Agnieszka Holland), Marin Karmitz’s interview for RED, and Jacques Witta’s interview for RED. It has Binoche’s selected scenes commentary for BLUE. All the wonderful “cinema lessons” by Kieslowski are also retained. The footage of Kieslowski announcing his retirement at Cannes also, thankfully, survived the cut. Also retained are two of Kieslowski’s student films, “The Tram” and “The Face”, although the picture quality of “The Tram” is noticeably worse than that on the Buena Vista DVD, with more print damage and a much darker picture.

The all-new extras offered by Criterion are all excellent. Each film comes with a 22-minute “video essay”, done by Insdorf for BLUE, film critic Tony Rayns for WHITE, and film writer Dennis Lim for RED. These segments are essentially audio commentaries with film clips and stills. While they are well-written and informative, they seem a little too terse, due to their short lengths, compared to Insdorf’s full-length commentaries for the Buena Vista DVDs.

There are new interviews with composer Zbigniew Preisner, actors Delpy, Jacob, and Zbigniew Zamachowski, and screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz. Criterion usually does great interviews, and these are no exception. They are all more in-depth and comprehensive than their MK2 counterparts. They were all shot in 2011. Ten years after they were interviewed by MK2, their enthusiasm and admiration for Kieslowski’s work are apparently unchanged.

There are also three wonderful documentaries not on the Buena Vista set. The 16-minute “Seven Women of Different Ages” (1978) shows seven ballet dancers in each day of the week, from a little ballerina to an old ballet teacher, subtly depicting the journey of a dancer and of life itself. “Talking Heads” (1980), running 12 minutes, interviews several people in the order of their ages about who they are and what they want to be; it brings to mind Michael Apted’s UP documentaries. And there is a 1-hour documentary made for Danish TV in 1995 called “Krzysztof Kieslowski: I’m So-So”, where the just-retired director reminisces about his career, from his early films to his later masterpieces, and we hear many of his pessimistic views about art, life, and politics. He concludes the film by saying, “To know is not my job. Not knowing is.”

The Criterion set also offers a fairly substantial 75-page booklet that includes a 18-page excerpt from the book “Kieslowski on Kieslowski” as well as interviews of the three cinematographers of THREE COLORS. The last page of the booklet also mentions the fact that Pro Logic is needed to hear surround sound, as I mentioned above.

Yes, this Criterion Blu-ray edition is a pricey set, and, unlike the Buena Vista edition, the three films are not sold separately. But the strength of the video and audio qualities and the comprehensive supplements still make this a worthy purchase.

A Solinas
Around here, red, white and blue are known as the colours of the American flag, and they are also the colours of the French flag. But they also are the names of the late Krzysztof Kieslowski’s brilliant “Three Colours” trilogy, which has a delicacy that most directors can only dream of. Beautiful, painful, artfully shot, it’s a visual feast for anyone who has an appreciation for beauty, subtlety and filmmaking.

In “Bleu,” Julie de Courcy (Juliette Binoche) and her family are in a car accident when their brakes fail, and her husband and daughter are killed. Devastated, she leaves her palatial house in the country after a night with her husband’s old friend Olivier (Benoît Régent), who has been in love with her for years. And though Julie tries to leave her old life behind, she is pulled in when Olivier starts to finish her husband’s last composition — and he tells her of a side of her husband that she never knew.

In the bitterly funny “Blanc,” hairdresser Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is being coldly divorced by his beautiful wife Dominique (Julie Delpy) because she is sexually dissatisfied with him — and she takes all his money too. But after returning to Poland, Karol rebuilds his life and fortune, and amid a web of killing, seduction and faked death, he comes up with a way to get back at Dominique…

And “Rouge” is the color of love. On her way home from a modelling session, Valentine (Irene Jacob) accidently injures a pregnant dog. The owner is Joseph Kern, (Jean-Louis Trintignant) an embittered ex-judge whose job has left him spiritually adrift, and who now spends his time wiretapping the phones of his neighbors and predicting what will happen in their lives. The friendship between Valentine and Kern grows, even as a young man’s current life mirrors what devastated Kern long ago…

The three colours of the French flag symbolize liberty, equality and fraternity — and these are echoed in the stories of Kieslowski’s films. And each of the three movies has its own “feel” — “Blue” is cool and sensual, “White” was sharp and sexy, and “Red” has a sweetness and richness that is truly moving.

And while most directors are just boring when they do slow, arty direction, Kieslowski infused his direction with sensual beauty and endless light and colour, like a painting come to life. And he intertwined many symbolic images and lingering threads from one movie to the next, whether it’s an old lady recycling bottles or a rather surprising finale for “Red” that brings all three movies’ protagonists together.

And he saturated the movies with the colour of their title — blue is sadness, depth and beauty; white is beautiful and pure, stark and blinding; red is passion and warmth. While this may not have been Kieslowski’s intention, the constant presence of these colors (a bridal gown, a swimming pool, and so on) add an extra dimension to the emotions in the story, especially the first.

Juliette Binoche is an extremely good actress, and this movie uses her expressiveness as most movies don’t. Zamachowski brings an element of humanity and poignancy to what could have been an idiotic character, and I never felt anything but understanding for this guy. And Irene Jacob brings a sweetness and innocence to her role as Valentine (aptly named, considering the title of the movie she stars in) that is rarely seen in modern movies.

In fact, this trilogy was ripe for a Criterion Collection release, and as usual they’re lavishing extras on it — high-def restorations; improved English subtitles; commentary by Juliette Binoche; interviews with actresses, writers, critics, producers and composers; video essays, a few short films and documentaries by Kieslowski, a feature-length documentary on Kieslowski, and the usual booklet of essays and printed interviews.

Kieslowski was an unusual and extremely talented moviemaker, and his “Three Colors” trilogy — “Bleu,” “Blanc” and “Rouge” — is an exceptional piece of work. We shall not see his like again.

The films themselves, especially Blue and Red are incredible. I won’t go into what the films are about as I’m sure it’s stated several other places. I will say that in these films, the use of color, use of limited dialogue, music, mise-en-scene, and camerawork – we see something that cinema is capable of that no other form of art is. Kieslowski really stretches the limits of filmmaking through deep levels of poetic and metaphoric language and imagery and is able to some up complex relationships in a single shot.

The Criterion Collection has done a great job as usual with a tremendous amount of special features, remastered versions, and a large booklet with interviews and an array of interesting behind the scenes materials. The last DVD has two of Kieslowski’s earlier documentaries. I have rarely seen so many special features in a film set. Three Colors: Blue, White, Red is most definitely worth the money.

T-shirt manufacturers use a heap of terms to describe their products. The terms are not always consistent and it helps to have a reference guide.

The following is the official Green Man T-Shirts Guide to understanding t-shirt terms:

20s, 20/1, 20s single: Unit of measurement that defines the fineness of cotton thread. A usual spool of single-ply cotton thread is comprised of 840 yards of cotton thread. If it takes 20 spools to weigh one pound, then the thread on those spools is referred to as 20s cotton, or 20/1. If 30 spools weigh one pound, then the thread on those spools is referred to as 30s cotton thread, or 30/1. If it takes 40 spools to weigh one pound, then the thread on those spools is referred to as 40s cotton, or 40/1. The higher number means a finer thread, and thence a finer, softer fabric is created. T-shirts made of 30s and 40s are softer, finer, and have better drape than t-shirts made of 20s. The terms are used numerous ways, but it’s the number that counts; “20s,” “20/1,” and “20 singles” are the same. Threads may be twisted together into thicker strands. If two 20/1 cotton threads were twisted together, it would be referred to as 20/2.

Bamboo Fabric: Rayon made from bamboo cellulose. Although rayon is a man-made synthetic material, most experts agree it is readily biodegradable. Bamboo fabric is exceedingly soft and has magnificent drape.

Bamboo: Fast growing plant, classified as a grass, which may be readily processed into rayon to make bamboo rayon clothing.

Bleach Wash: A routine that uses bleach to soften and distress the look of the fabric being washed.

Boat Neck: A very wide neckline that runs throughout the collarbone area to the shoulder points. Derives from early sailors’ shirts, where the wide neck enabled quick remotion if the sailor fell overboard.

The Carbon Trust works with companies to help reduce their carbon footprint, and now certifies companies and productions as having a “low carbon” or “no carbon” footprint. A few t-shirt companies now construct “low carbon footprint” t-shirts.

Carding: A fiber cleaning procedure that does away with short fibers and removes dirt and alien matter. Carding may be done by hand or by big machines using drum rollers. Carded-only cotton is not as desirable as combed cotton.

Cellulase Wash: Another name for enzyme wash. This gives fabric a soft feel and a vintage look, depending on how the wash is done.

Cellulose: Derived from the cell walls of sure plants. Useful in making sure types of fabrics, including acetate, triacetate, and rayon. Bamboo fabric is actually rayon made from bamboo cellulose.

Climate Neutral: A term used to describe a company, process, or product that has zero affect on the Earth’s climate. A few t-shirt makers publicize their company as climate neutral.

CO2: Carbon dioxide. A chemical compound composed of two oxygen corpuscles and one carbon atom. Known as a “greenhouse” gas because of it is kinship with global warming.

Drape, Drapability: Refers to how a fabric hangs. A fabric like bamboo rayon has splendid drape, while a coarse fabric like burlap has very little. T-shirts that have good drape calibers feel nicer to wear.

Drop Tail: A garment that features a longer back than front.

Eco-Friendly: Extremely loose term that refers to a product’s “greenness.” Almost useless in realistically assessing a product. Favorite term employed by green washers.

I figured this out by purchasing my first from a brick & mortar store and realizing a 7-8 was considered a “medium” They work great as a rash guard shirt and should be ordered to fit like a glove (pardon the pun) Great swim/surf shirts if you get the right size.

Here’s a cheat sheet to their sizing:
Size XS 3-4
Size S 5-6
Size M 7-8
Size L 9-10
Size XL 11-12

Black
Body Glove Womens Short Arm Lycra Rash Guard Shirt
On the advice of other rash guard buyer reviews, I ordered this shirt in a XL (the largest size offered), as I normally wear a M/L. I wasn’t even going to attempt to try it on because it seemed, in my opinion, very small and tight for a XL. I am not sure if just Body Glove sizes these snug, or if all form fitted rash guards run small in size. It is a really nice looking shirt & I wish they made these in larger or true-to-fit ‘real women’ sizes. Shame it didn’t fit & I had to return it! ***I would suggest to others to ask for specific measurements before ordering & not to go by the merchants standard sizing chart.

Haviland
I am 5’6″, 122 lbs, bust 34-B, 26″ waist, 35″ hips. In shirts/sweaters, I could wear a misses Sm, but prefer a Med. I DON’T like clothes that fit snug! That being said, I figured I should order an Extra Large in this shirt. I was RIGHT on!!! I love this shirt. Beautiful quality and with the XL it ‘fits’ my arms and chest, (not tight). It is slack around my middle, but not sloppy enough to ride up in the water. Perfect! Also ordered my husband an XXL with the same results, (he usually runs between a Med and a Lrg in shirts). Happy snorkeling!

T-shirt makers use a heap of terms to describe their products. The terms are not always consistent and it helps to have a reference guide.

The following is the official Green Man T-Shirts Guide to understanding t-shirt terms:

20s, 20/1, 20s single: Unit of measurement that defines the fineness of cotton thread. A frequent spool of single-ply cotton thread is comprised of 840 yards of cotton thread. The terms are used a lot of ways, but it’s the number that counts; “20s,” “20/1,” and “20 singles” are the same.

I have more of these than any other card I own because they are a very good value for capacity/price/and speed. My initial disappointment over the lack of super high speed is outweighed by the reality that this card is an exceptional value.

Stone
I purchased this for use with my new Canon T2i. I use it primarily for shooting full resolution 1080p video, although I shoot stills as well.

The camera choked on the class 4 chip that I originally purchased, but with this one, it is amazing. I can shoot rapidfire 18 megapixel stills (I’ve tested it up to 30+ shots in a row), and there is no lag. I’ve never had an error when shooting hi-def video.

Highly recommended! I’m buying another one.

The card I had been using before ordering this one was a Kingston Class 6 micro sd card and it worked well enough for the type of shooting I did. Class 6 was the card speed that Canon recommended when I bought my T1i (Class 10 cards were not yet available) and it seemed fast enough for the way I used my camera – isolated single photos taken at Medium (8 MP) or Large (15 MP) jpg settings and 1280 x 720 video. And while I ocassionally took continuous photos, I had never much exceeded 5-10 photos in a row and had never run into a problem with my Class 6 card.

When I first saw the Class 10 cards I did some experiments with my camera. How many continuous Large photos could I take before the camera slowed down? It turned out to be about 30. And how many RAW photos could I take before the camera slowed down? It turned out to be about 9. SInce I did not generally take any photos in RAW and never needed more than about 10 continuous photos at Large, the Class 6 card seemed more than sufficient for my needs. But I wondered about the speed of the Class 10 cards enough that I finally bought one.

It turns out that the Class 10 card is sufficiently fast that there does not seem to be a reasonable upper limit on single Large photos. I have taken 60 on continuous without an issue. And although I still cannot take more than 9 RAW photos on continuous with the Class 10 card, when I am finished taking those photos the camera no longer displays a Wait – writing pictures screen. The RAW photos get written from the built-in memory to the card so quickly that the camera does not need to display the Wait screen.

So this card is fast! Given the way I take photos this purchase was unnecessary, but still I am glad I bought it. I know I will not run into a situation where speed is an issue with this card.
